Why don’t they just get rid of the Torrent sites?

Torrent sites are illegal as they aid illegal copying – so why are the sites allowed to continue on the Internet?

If you do a search for ‘torrent’ you get lots of sites appearing – if it is easy for us to find them than it must be just as easy for the government – why do they not shut them down?

Because they cant shut down sites in different countries legally. Most are hosted in places where piracy is Simi legal or fully legal.

As far as I know torrent sites aren’t illegal as they don’t actually contain pirated material on their servers, they just provide a link to it. In that sense they are just another search engine. You can’t ban Google just because if, say you typed ‘bomb making’, you could find illegal material. Then again that argument didn’t work for Pirate Bay, so who knows!

What you’re suggesting here ranges between very extremely difficult to impossible.

The websites themselves are in a ‘gray area’ of the law. They don’t host the material to be obtained illegally. They only point to where you can get the material illegally. That is not illegal.

Almost all of these websites are not hosted in the United States, so they cannot be shut down for violating United States’ copyright laws anyway.

I know it’s not the answer you want to hear, but it’s the harsh reality that torrent sites are well out of government’s controls

As far as I know torrents are not illegal, they are just like ‘mirrors’ for downloading stuff off the net for other countries. Why not visit levelupgames.com or ubuntu.org and see for yourself, they made their products available for download on a torrent site.

the torrent sites do not host the materials. the whole system is decentralized, unlike napster in the past, which had servers which hosted the material and could be tracked. also in several countries, the whole copyright issue is not completely addressed, so there is a lack of headway in that avenue.
Also torrent files are generally known for their reputation( that of the uploader). Unlike p2p networks like Gnutella which can be polluted by dumping dummy files/viruses of same name etc, torrents are constantly monitored and reported if they violate what they are advertising in the torrent description.
torrents(though they advocate piracy) help bring artists into the limelight. many people still buy CD’s of their favourite album and support the artist.

One argument that makes it legal is that some people download a lot of films and/or music because they may have had it in a different non-digital format. So say you have a film on VHS and want it on your laptop without having to buy hardware to convert and have a low quality copy.

Also people use them to get to stuff that isn’t copyrighted, like the other types of media that can be shared.

Yes a lot of people do use it illegally, but the problem is that it’s soo difficult to police and there are arguments for it to be used legally.

Torrent sites are not illegal in themselves but hosting illegal software is. But as many come from inside the Russian Federation or other countries with lax internet laws, getting them closed is almost an impossibility. Also the internet is worldwide and what is considered illegal in one country may not be so in another. There are international standards but no country adheres to them.
